Go, Nick, Go!

Here's a sentence that I feel funny typing: My brother-in-law is running for Congress. Isn't that cool? I'm really excited about Nick and Beth's future. The campaign is swinging along nicely and we're thankful to be close to the action. Last weekend we got to stuff some envelopes and feel like we were doing something to help! The invitations were for 3 big fundraising banquets in May with special guest, Ed Meese, former Attorney General for President Reagan. Beth worked for him when they were at the Heritage Foundation in D.C. Check out Nick's website with the link at the far right!

Truth and Children

I had a hard time on Easter Sunday.

We visited the large church where they were doing an Easter musical about the life of Christ with all the graphic details of the crucifixion.

I had seen productions like this before and understood it could be hard for my kids, but at the same time, I wanted them to see the other scenes like Jesus being born and healing the sick. (It was a long musical!)

Gregory and Daniel were both very scared during the arrest and crucifixion of Christ. Of course, it wasn't The Passion of the Christ up on stage, but there was still enough to scare a small child.

Greg kept saying he wanted to go home and Daniel kept asking if it was done. Thankfully, the story always has a happy ending, but I couldn't help wondering if we shouldn't have had them in there. Granted, there were many small children in the auditorium, but each child is different.

I never want to hide the truth from my children, but it's hard knowing how much truth to share at one time. It's like handing a child a plate of steak. They might like steak and it is good for them, but an adult has to cut it into something they can digest and handle.

And while we're on this subject, I think we should put some thought into these grand productions. Now that I have children, I wish they could take the Easter story and keep it strong without worrying about the fears I just wrote about. And after seeing The Passion, anything else falls short.

What I do know is that my children walked away with a real sense of the punishment Jesus took for their sins, and there can be no damage in that. They haven't had nightmares or bouts of fear since Sunday. Thankfully, their memories are short and they are quick to move on to the next thing that captures their attention. Just wondered if anyone else has had these thoughts.

No Day is Ordinary...

This morning, I was reading to the older boys from their Beginner's Bible about Jesus walking on water, blessing and loving on children, and healing the sick. Daniel had Jesus on the brain and followed me in when I went to the bedroom to change Jonathan's diaper. Our conversation went something like this...

D: Jesus loves me!
me: Yes, He does!
D: Where is Jesus?
me: He lives in Heaven and He can live in your heart if you open it up to Him.
D: (brief pause) I want to open my heart, Mommy.
me: (hearing the Hallelujah chorus in my mind) Well, let's pray together!

We went into the living room where we held hands and he repeated the words I spoke. It was a really amazing moment. Even though he's only 3, I don't want to squelch any desire he has to welcome the Savior.

Enjoying a jar of squash... check out those new chompers...

After seeing my delight in Daniel's prayer, Gregory decided to follow suit. He asked Jesus into his heart when he was 3, but he didn't remember. Right now their hearts are so open and trusting - I pray they stay that way! (Greg looks like he's posing for a Brady Bunch opening shot here...)

The View From Here

Our new favorite thing to do: Sit in the front yard, build a fire, and watch the sun go down on the lake.

Funny Picture of the Week

We found this in the wall of our condo in Florida on vacation. Can you guess what it is? (You have to be 30 or older to really get this...)

I am now logged on here at home and quite happy to be back in the mix.

More reflections later...
